What's old is new again in Montreal.
Centre Philip Danault is set to join the Canadiens for their Tuesday game in Boston against the Bruins after being re-acquired by the Atlantic Division squad, general manager Kent Hughes told reporters on Saturday.
To make room for Danault on the roster, defenceman Kaiden Guhle and forward Kirby Dach were each transferred to long-term injured reserve.
The Canadiens dealt a second-round pick to Los Angeles to bring Danault back shortly before the holiday trade freeze took effect on Friday night.
Danault, of Victoriaville, Que., played in Montreal from 2015 to 2021 before signing a multi-year deal with the Kings. He was a member of the Habs when they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.
He has struggled offensively through his first 30 games of the season with just five assists while averaging over 16 minutes of ice time.
However, the 12-year NHL veteran has a track record as an impactful two-way player.
Guhle had surgery for a partially torn adductor muscle in November and was ruled out for eight to 10 weeks at the time.
Dach suffered a fractured foot in November and was ruled out for four to six weeks.
